「日本人は謝り過ぎ。国際社会じゃ通用しない」などと言われますが、
それはビジネス上の取引や損害賠償に関わる問題が発生した場合の話です。
日常生活のレベルでは、何を言っていいのかわからず黙っちゃうのに比べたら、
とりあえず謝っちゃうほうがマシと言えます。

日本の英語教育は間違ってる？

キーボードのタッチタイピング（キーボードを見ずにタイプすること）を学ぶ際、
最初に覚えるべきキーは何でしょうか？
もっとも使用頻度の高いリターンキー？ホームポジションの「F」と「J」？
いえいえ、実は「デリートキー」なんです。
つまり、打ち間違えた文字を消すキーです。
この場所を最初に覚えれば、間違ってタイプしてもすぐに打ち直すことができますから、
記憶が不確かでも思い切ってキーを打つことができるようになり、
即日、タッチタイピングできるようになります。
もちろんキーの打ち間違えは多いですが、タッチタイピングができるようになると
キーボードを打つ頻度も高くなりますので、あとは使いながら自然と上達します。

前置きが長くなってしまいましたが、英語学習も同じなのです。
英語が苦手な日本人が、まず最初に覚えるべきことは挨拶や理想的会話などではなく、
相手が何を言っているのかわからなかった場合の回避方法です。
町でガイジンからいきなり話しかけられてしまったとき、
いかにして逃げ出すかなのです。

逃げればいいじゃんと言っているわけではありません。
いつでも逃げられるという安心感があれば、人は恐れず英語に接する事ができるのです。
私が気楽に英会話できるようになったきっかけは、
「Sorry?」（え？）
を知ったときからでした。
これが、英会話におけるデリートキーです。

相手がわけのわからないことを言っていたら、とりあえず「Sorry?」でいいのです。
短いですし覚えるのも簡単です。
いっけん、何の問題解決になっていないように思われるかもしれませんが、
タッチタイピングと同じで、まずは聞き取れなくてもいいから、うまく喋れなくても
いいから、英会話することで、あとは次第に覚えていくことができるのです。
